Planters for Dublin City Centre
By 2014, Dublin City Council had a problem. They had 70+ timber planting boxes decorating the city but due to weather, moisture and the rigours of continually cycling the boxes in and out of their depot for the Summer and Winter planting seasons, many of the boxes had started to disintegrate.
The cost of the maintenance and replacement of these planters was growing and, most frustratingly, the timber planters were barely a decade old.
Ecoplastic approached Dublin City Council with a solution – a maintenance free, rot proof and sturdy planting box made from 100% recycled plastic that wouldn’t fall apart with continual movement. And with a lifespan of 40+ years, Ecoplastic planters would be part of the city’s landscape for decades longer than any timber box, reducing short term maintenance cost and longer term replacement costs.
A main focus for the project was aesthetic – with a textured, woodgrain–like finish and a natural basalt brown colouring, Ecoplastic’s planters blended into the cityscape just as well as any timber planter.
